Matthew Parkman.
Born March 30, 1970 to Maury and Sylvia Parkman, Matt was a friendly child. His father left him and his mother when Matt was only a boy. Matt never understood why his father left and hated him, thinking he abandoned their family. His mother never really got over the loss and from that point on was nothing of a mother to Matt. She spent most of her time trying to handle the fact that she was a single parent. This left Matt to grow up and take care of himself. It also made him rely on himself more than anyone else, something that he stuck to for the rest of his life. As a matter of fact, it was integral in his career choice.
Matt always wanted to be a cop. Why, he didn't know. Maybe it was the uniforms or the fact that they carried guns. Whatever it was, he worked hard for it. His biggest stumbling block in this, unbelievably, was his dyslexia. Everytime he went to take the detective's exam, he failed it. He had problems reading the test, not able to understand a lot of the questions. This frustrated him - he hated not being able to make it further in his chosen career. It also frustrated his wife, Janice. She had an affair with one of Matt's coworkers. And no matter that he tried to forgive her, he just couldn't. The two ended up getting a divorce, all the stress of their marriage not worth it.
Matt discovered - by accident really - that he could read minds. At first he thought it was just hallucinations. But no...he could focus on someone and read their mind. This ability helped him crack into one of the most important cases of his life. The Walker case. Matt arrived at a crime scene one day and was able to discover little Molly Walker hiding in a closet. Someone had killed her parents and was going to do the same thing to her. But there was something about Molly that made Matt protective. He vowed to hunt down the man that did this to her. He did his best to keep her safe through various phases in that first year. First, through the Sylar issue. Then, when people wanted to kill her because of her tracking abilities. He wouldn't have it. He'd promised her that no one would ever hurt her. And he meant to keep that promise.
Molly became the ward of Matt and his friend, Mohinder Suresh. The two of them looked out for Molly while they lived in Mohinder's apartment in New York City. Matt eventually became detective in the NYPD - using his powers to do so. He read the minds of the men taking the test around him and also the men that interviewed him. He was able to pass with flying colors - no one questioned. They just figured that since he'd taken it so many times, he was due. This was just one of the cases of Matt using his powers for personal gain. He discovered that not only could he read minds, he could force his thoughts into the minds of other people.
During this time, Matt's father came back into his life. It was by accident, of course. Matt asked Molly to use her abilites to hunt him down. This led Matt's father to be able to trap Molly in her nightmare world - Molly slipped into a coma. Terrified of what was going on, Matt eventually harnessed his abilities enough to be able to do the same thing to his father. He was able to rescue Molly and bring her out of her coma while at the same time promising that his father wouldn't be able to harm her again.
It was a little scary really, the things that Matt could do. Not only could he read thoughts, he could also force people to do his will by just a thought. It took a while before he was able to control this, but when he did, he used it to his best advantage. People always think that they are doing things of their own free will. But a few well placed suggestions, a couple slight nudges and Matt's free will became everyone elses. He let this go to his head - abusing it, really. He used it on everyone. The worst part was when he used it on Molly. He thought he was keeping her safe. That was his biggest concern. However, he ended up just pushing her away. When she found out that he was using his powers on her, she was furious. She left the apartment and went to live in New Orleans with Micah and his family.
After Molly left, it forced Matt to take a good hard look at what he was doing. He had abused the trust of the only person who had ever unconditionally loved him. He knew that to get her to trust him again would be an uphill battle, but one that he'd fight one day. He kept training his powers, using them only when he had no other choice. But, he couldn't let them just go to waste. After all, reading someone's mind is a nice trick. Matt - using Mohinder as a stand-in - kept track of Molly as she grew up. When he found out she was going to be going to school in Kansas City, with no one around to protect her, he couldn't have it.
A few well placed mental pushes and there he was. Detective Matt Parkman, Kansas City Police Department. He knew that Molly wouldn't welcome him back with open arms. But he missed her - missed the girl that made him feel important. She was grown up now and he was about to see her for the first time as an adult. How different could she be? Did he really want to know? And how would he adjust to life here, away from all he'd ever known?
